What Requirements Engineering Taught Me About Better Websites

Lessons from technical roles, including ICS, that make website projects clearer, more focused and easier to deliver.

THE STORY2 MIN READ

Before focusing more closely on SEO and websites, I spent years working with software and requirements. One lesson has stayed with me: unclear requirements make almost every later decision harder.

Understand the problem before selecting the solution

At ICS GmbH, requirements work involved analysing complex systems and making expectations understandable to the people who needed to deliver them. That discipline is useful in smaller projects too.

Consider a company asking for “a more modern website.” What does modern mean here? Faster loading? Easier editing? Better enquiries? Improved mobile usability? The right implementation depends on the answer.

Turn goals into observable outcomes

I like to ask a few simple questions at the start of a web project: Who are the primary users? What are they trying to do? Which pages support the most valuable actions? How will we tell whether the change worked?

These questions prevent the project from becoming only a discussion about colors and visual preferences.

Keep business and technical teams aligned

My experience across engineering, business analysis and product-related work helps me translate between different priorities. A business owner might describe a problem in customer terms. A developer needs a clear task. Good requirements connect the two.

Apply the same thinking to SEO

Instead of saying “improve SEO,” define a concrete starting point: ensure service pages are indexable, align important queries with useful pages, fix broken internal navigation and record qualified enquiries. Those tasks can be reviewed and prioritised.

The lesson

Good websites are not just designed. They are specified, tested and improved. If you’re planning a redesign or struggling with a confusing existing site, explore my WordPress web design service or start a conversation.
